I really like the idea of adding Weegar, balance element TO could really use. Love to see JT in TO and bring a presence to our offense. I think Spezza is an easy move to 3rd line too.
Always appreciate the work you & ''downtown'' Steven Brown put into your videos, (but hoping you'll both find an angle that isn't discussed commonly on sports talk already)... Having said that.... Weegar - YES!!! I don't think Toronto instantly becomes a cup contender (we always say that whenever Toronto makes a trade or FA signing).... BUT.... I do think we're a legitimate playoff team that should make it to the 2nd round. So we go from top 16 in the league to top 8...meh, that's pretty good! :) On another note... I'm really curious to see how Calgary does with Markstrom. Heck, if they get their hands on some secondary scoring, THEY might be a legit cup contender (ok, that's also exaggeration)...but if they get secondary scoring, it's not a stretch to say they should also make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs assuming Markstrom repeats his dominant play.
I say trade Johnsson and Holl for another dman. Shut down type. Or trade them for a top notch winger if big buff is still available. Dubas said in an interview with the cap hit we have right now and the roster we have he doesnt think we will have an issue going into the season. Theyve run all scenarios and they already know how much they will pay dermott and mikheyev. And they are prepared to not make another trade this off season.
How could Dubas think his roster is fine the way it is? Only a moron would think that and that's exactly what Dubas is. it doesn't matter what way you look at it. Dubas is NOT the right person for the Leafs GM. When is Shanahan ever going to get that through his head
I see Engvall as all too replaceable with someone who costs league minimum. Hoping the can squeeze Mikheyev a little more than 1.5m as well, but I think he has arbitration rights, so may not be so lucky there. The way I see it, that bottom line needs to be costing us ideally less than 2.5m total. Hopefully the Weegar @ 3m rumors are accurate. Interesting wrinkle to note. Given we already have Rielly, Brodie and Muzzin, if we trade for and sign Weegar with some term we'd then have 4 top 4 D we'd want to protect in the upcoming expansion draft. So, that'd force our hand to going 8 skaters, instead of 7 forwards/3 defenseman route. Not necessarily a problem, but something worth keeping in mind. I'd say sign Weegar for just this one season so he's a UFA when the expansion draft happens, and that could work, but it's a gamble, because he could then walk after the 1 year deal. You'd have to hope you could reasonably replace him in FA at that point in time - and idk maybe you can. Thankfully guys like Robertson, Sandin & Liljegren are exempt Overall, I definitely hope we're able to make another addition to the backend. I'm still very curious to see what ends up happening with Freddy. I don't exactly want to move him, but I also don't want to lose him for nothing. And if Markstrom can get 6x6, what is Freddy gonna get...
Here's what Toronto needs to do. Recognize that they have a very young team, stop trying to win now, and bring up the kids on the Blueline and let them have their ups and downs. Give it a couple more years
Agreed. And I never understood why they signed him. Unless they intended to trade one of the three rookie forwards they had at the time this cap crunch now was inevitable
If you have to upgrade the right side D. It makes sense to trade someone that already plays there. I think you can off load kerfoot, Johansson and Holl for picks n prospects and sign Travis Hamonic for no assets.
The more I think about it, the more I get the sense that Dubas thinks he is done for this offseason. I don’t see him moving Holl, just because of how high he is on Holl and him saying something along the lines of Holl being the best defensemen the Marlies had. I think weegar would really solidify the leafs defense but I think Dubas is probably thinking he has enough pieces even though it’s clear that the grit aspect hasn’t really been addressed. Especially considering he signed Simmonds but we lost Clifford so the leafs really aren’t much grittier
People are finally getting wise to Lehtonen, and what he's gonna bring to the Leafs D-corps. If his game translates from the open ice to the NHL surface and pace, he will likely become a solid #4. And I'm absolutely sure of this: Barabanov is gonna crush it, he's ABSOLUTELY gonna challenge Robertson for that 2nd/3rd line, maybe even 1st line wing potential that everyone is giving Robertson credit for. I'm so excited for what's happening with this team.
@KNorth2 He'd only be there because I don't know who else you would have to play the C position if Kerfoot is traded. Spezza was one of our best players against Columbus and I think he still has a little bit left in the tank. At this point, I don't think we're trading Kerfoot so it's probably a non-issue.
KNorth2 Spezza maybe on the fourth line because there are already so many forwards. He still plays very effective and I believe we’ll have a proper shut down/checking line.
I think Spezza on the third line would be a big mistake. No disrespect meant, but the guy is barely a 4th liner at this point. I'd be surprised if Spezza is an everyday player in the lineup this year tbh. I think it's more likely he cycles in and out with a few other guys.
Expect the Leafs to start the year with just Brodie added on defense. If Holl continues to improve and Dermott takes a step forward we will be okay. Can't add another guy with Rielly and Muzzin coming up next year. Gotta be cap smart. Any moves to free money up has to be up front.
@Kevin Godinez that's what I mean Lehtonen is absolutely eating the KHL alive so I wouldn't be surprised if he came over and was inserted into the Top 4 beside Muzzin
This is what i think the top two lines should be... at the start. And if anyone over achieves like roberston or Engvall move them up. But i see them startin the season with simmonds in the top 6 on the left side with either matthews or Tavares. If hes not playing well... send him to the bottom 6 and call engvall or robertson to the top 6.
@AG - 12ZZ 560915 PAS North um... yes. Simmonds may be able to have a jump start again with one of the two centers. By game 10 they'll know if its a good fit or nit.
why not use the low real dollars owed to freddy and deal him, dermot and a 2nd to Arizona for keumper and Hossa contract,?? they can use hossa 5 mil to open up room on ltir and keumper is slightly less expensive than freddy, plus it saves Arizona alot, also they can use Johnsson to maybe make a play for Kessler contract also
We need this guy!! What does Florida want? Friedman and Bob Mackenzie got Leaf fans excited over this guy. If Weegar was added to the Team our top 4 would set for years. Would be tougher team to play against. We have void since Polak left.
K P if that’s all takes give them Dermott and a pick. We have Rasmus Sandin who is a better version and can afford to part with Dermott. Dermott can be top 4 on a team like Detroit. We don’t have someone like Weegar.
The problem is the expansion draft. Brodie and Muzzin have NMC so they will be automatically protected by Toronto. The leafs also obviously aren’t going to expose Reilly so he is the third defenceman they protect. So like either they can trade for someone and have them exposed in the expansion draft or just run with what they got
@KNorth2 There's a good chance Brodie is exposed because they know no one is taking that contract on with 7.5 mil being owed in his final year. I believe they structured the deal that way with the expansion draft in mind.
Lehtonen the best player in the khl.... But why totonto´s take Brodie? what happens after Lehtonen take like 82 games and 50 points and then he is free agent.
Don't dump in Kappy man.. he was constantly moved around.. he never got a fair shot to develop any chemistry with Matthews or Tavares.. Nylander needs to pick it up. I have no love for him because he has underperformed more than anyone.. and why do the Leafs keep him.. Simply because NO ONE WOULD TAKE HIM WITH HIS CONTRACT!! So they are stuck with him.. he held out, Dumas caved..(like an idiot) and Nylander gets overpaid.. So let's hold him accountable this year..
I miss that intro track, had some nice low hit beats and bass drums. if I forgot to turn down the volume, then it be like, my neighbours know Im watching APH, and tun to get their laptops to watch too. Your're sub count relies on it. )
The Leaf fan bass seem to need a fall guy and it sounds like Freddy is the guy.(fall guy). I think he is one of the best goilies. He needs help, D, grit, and make a top end trade. The chemistry is off
I think you may be misunderstanding why his name is out there. Most of us love Freddy and think he's terrific. That's precisely why his name is out there, as counter-intuitive as that may sound. It seems highly improbably the Leafs will be in a position where they can afford to keep Freddy beyond this upcoming season. He's gonna get paid. So, what do you do then if you're the Leafs? Do you ride out this year with Freddy, which almost certainly makes you a better team and lose him for nothing? Or do you get out ahead of it, likely weaken your goaltending at least by a bit, but get assets for Freddy as well as some stability in the position going forward? It's a tough situation... The Leafs can possibly afford to weaken their starter position knowing they have a really good second goalie in Jack Campbell, especially so if they've upgraded their defense pretty significantly like Brodie/Weegar would do...
You lost me when you said Kerfoot is good. Are you crazy? Kerfoot cost the team at least one goal EVERY game. Go back and look it is always Kerfoot making stupid turnovers and at the worst times. He is an idiot. He makes a few good plays here and there but he is too bad at turnovers.
kerfoot is not a good center. he was playing on the wing from time to time and thats not a good thing. they should sign brassard or thornton someone who is physical
Andrew Piluk Hockey yeah but still the amount of points he got this year wasn’t enough and I feel like Toronto still needs another guy who can hit more
Kapenen was awful when placed on the top 2 lines. All he did was speed up the ice and circle back and do nothing or take a low danger shot that resulted in nothing.
We as Leaf shouldn’t get to excited about these so called top guys out of the KHL Our track record is not great Zaietsev Ozighanov .. I remember everyone ahh this guy is solid top 4 potential Dud and dud So this guy coming Let him play in the AHL prove something Give Sandin the shot.. KHL. 🙄
Richard - I agree... leafs have been burned in the past with KHL superstars. The ice surface size is larger, and quality of opposing players is barely above AHL levels, so I'll wait and see on Lehtonen
Not sure I see Weegar sign in TO for 3 million, tax purposes makes it not worth it - he’s better off signing in FLA for 2-2.5 and take home $ would be the same
Yeah, really... didn't realize Weeger's market value was that high. Don't really know much about the guy, don't watch a lot of the Panthers, but I do know a lot about taxes in both countries, and that does come into play.
Simmonds, low risk, cheap, good move. Brodie, term and money too long and too much...he will help but not a good deal...we still have work to do but heading in the right direction...still need to get tougher, a stay at home D...i do like Weegar...and let some of the young guys play this year...GO LEAFS GO
Brodie is only 30. A four year term is perfect. The annual figure may be 500k too high, but it is free agency so you have to pay a little extra for good players. It also helps that Brodie played with a Norris callibre defencemen and held his own. He will be great alongside Rielly.
The problem with weegar is he just isn't that good. Id rather the likes of Josh Manson. And you'd be naive to think Holl is leaving. They signed him cuz Keefe loves him. He's not going anywhere.
You definitely haven't researched Weegar at all. We all would like Manson, but we are NOT getting Manson. It takes both teams to agree to a trade believe it or not.
I still don't see a team that's hard to play against. That third line is still weak. Is that the checking line you put out to shut down the opposition? Kyle Dubas has, so far, demonstrated a poor ability to build a competitive NHL team. The Simmonds signing is pretty awful. The guy is a few years removed from being an impact player. At $1.5 million, it's ridiculous. Brodie is a good signing and Weegar would be a nice addition. But even with those two, you still need to move out Kerfoot. At the end of the day, though, the Leafs' success will depend on the Big Four. If they win a cup, it'll be because of them; if they lose in the first round, it'll be because of them. Your core guys have to be the ones to lead the team. (I'd also add Rielly and Andersen to the core group). So far, I'm not convinced you can win a Stanley Cup with the Big Four. I hope to hell I'm wrong.
Unfortunately, Dubas has been occupied with unscrewing some of Lou's terrible mistakes. Think about how easier Dubas would have had it if he didn't need to give up a pick to get rid of Marleau or didn't have to take on a 4.5 mil cap hit just to get rid of Zaitsev. Not to mention all the terrible draft decisions Mark Hunter made which hurt our prospect pool. Lou also threw away two 2nd round picks for rentals like Boyle and Plekanec.
@Michael Kirkpatrick ya like fuck man. Goal scoring is even our issue. We could definitely use those picks to draft another guy like matthews. Doesnt dubas know how to draft a guy that'll score 40 goals year in year out for majority of a decade? Like what the hell? We need Ceci back. Strip the C off JT and give it Ceci or Johnsson. We need real leadership.
colin - I agree... if Ceci will accept 9 M/yr x 8 years, they shouldn't even hesitate... trade Matthews for some middle round picks only in order to make room for Ceci's salary. It's sooo clear... come on Dubas... grow a brain
Great video, Andrew!
Well-researched and professionally delivered, as always.
Congratulations on breaking 8K subscribers! You deserve it!!

kyle dubas is definitely not done, and he’s making some really great moves. another great video. lots of options for what toronto could be doing.

Tavares wasn't brought here to be on a development team.
Tell that to all those bandwagon fans. Stop abusing them on social media.

Man, I hope you're right, no way they can be done. Lets get some D and some grit!
I believe the acquisition of a top pairing dman will attract another rugged dman or forward.
They got both. Is nothing enough?
Ummmm...we have? Don’t you need “let’s get more D and grit?”
Bogosian in...Andreas Johnnson out. If they could add Weegar I might be happy with the upgrades.
Thanks Andrew for a very informative video.

good deals for leafs going to be tougher to beet than last year brian
Yeah with your videos and hard work, that deserves a sub!
Thanks
weegar can be a demelo type for Toronto
if you sign Weegar, who do you protect in the expansion draft?
Andrew what are your thoughts on the zach Bogosian deal 1 year at $1 million?
Leafs will be a legitimate Stanley cup contender if we can pick up Weegar
@Kevin Godinez that's what I mean Lehtonen is absolutely eating the KHL alive so I wouldn't be surprised if he came over and was inserted into the Top 4 beside Muzzin
Rowdy_Roddy67 we also have that lehntonen from the khl
@Colin MacInnis I'd say so as well especially if Lehtonen is looking like a beast right now
@Alex Rowdy Rodrigues yea Savard is a big body would be great for sure
@Alex Rowdy Rodrigues i agree but i say we move Holl before dermott

Alot to like about MW

Dermott and Bracco ( and a bag of pucks) 4 Weegar?

I'd expect Dermott and a pick. They're trying to shed salary and signed Gudas already so I can't imagine them taking on Holl.
Trade kerfuffle and move Engvall to center.
I think he would be perfect too ngl
why do i see TO picking up a LTIR contract get cap space to sign weeger and others
The problem is the expansion draft. Brodie and Muzzin have NMC so they will be automatically protected by Toronto. Neither Brodie or Muzzin have to be protected, but it's a moot point, because you 100% are protecting them anyway.
K P ya but I think the NMC includes the expansion draft, or at least that is what I have heard
Brodie only has a NMC for year 1 of the contract. Years 2-4 are NTC
weegar shouldn't t make more than demelo
Lehtonen the best player in the khl.... But why totonto´s take Brodie? what happens after Lehtonen take like 82 games and 50 points and then he is free agent.
@Karl T well at least it would be cheaper to keep on the team.
What happens if Lehtonen only gets 20 points?
He ain’t getting 50 points lol
Don't dump in Kappy man.. he was constantly moved around.. he never got a fair shot to develop any chemistry with Matthews or Tavares.. Nylander needs to pick it up. I have no love for him because he has underperformed more than anyone.. and why do the Leafs keep him.. Simply because NO ONE WOULD TAKE HIM WITH HIS CONTRACT!! So they are stuck with him.. he held out, Dumas caved..(like an idiot) and Nylander gets overpaid.. So let's hold him accountable this year..
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
Fair analysis Andrew
Thanks
nice video
grit and bit more size would be nice... balance is key and t.o. does not have it
everyone says Kerfoot. if so who plays 3c?
Go wings
Soooooooo were not keeping Ceci ?
I miss that intro track, had some nice low hit beats and bass drums. if I forgot to turn down the volume, then it be like, my neighbours know Im watching APH, and tun to get their laptops to watch too. Your're sub count relies on it. )
this guy stole my initials. and name, hmph
That's precisely why his name is out there, as counter-intuitive as that may sound. kerfoot is not a good center. he was playing on the wing from time to time and thats not a good thing. they should sign brassard or thornton someone who is physical
@Itz Jxsh To be fair, his linemates switched all the time and he wasn't allowed to build chemistry whatsoever.
Andrew Piluk Hockey yeah but still the amount of points he got this year wasn’t enough and I feel like Toronto still needs another guy who can hit more
Kerfoot can play both positions well
He's average. I believe he can be easily replaced.
You are absolutely wrong about Kappanen.
Kapenen was awful when placed on the top 2 lines. All he did was speed up the ice and circle back and do nothing or take a low danger shot that resulted in nothing.
Show me the proof he can hang? Thats why he was traded
We also have Malgin at 700,000 I know he didn't play alot last year but if he's given a shot he could work
Tyson Barrie is a Morgan Rielly type player but way shittier.
Bad break down.. weeger is worth no more then 2 mil.. look at similar players in the leagues.
Andrew M He will get over 2 in arbitration. Which means he is guaranteed over 2.
Maybe you should be giving some examples to prove your point.
He is guaranteed to get more then 2
Is McKenzie weeger really that much better than Justin Holl?? I don't see why they make anymore moves tbh
Get rid of kerfoot
Don't sleep on travis dermott
Dermott is gross
Where’s stl/ Krug video?
We let Mango go for a fringe player!!
I know we need cap space, but we needed to get more for Mango!!
Bad trade!!
@Andrew Piluk Hockey We only needed cap space because Dumbass over paid other players!!
Good trade. Look into his numbers. It was a smart move. We need the cap space and we signed a tough d man.
What about a trade with Dallas Stars for tough defenseman Jamie Oleksiak 6' 7, 255 lb, Age: 27. 2,1 millions.
Give up what in trade?
We as Leaf shouldn’t get to excited about these so called top guys out of the KHL
Our track record is not great
Zaietsev
Ozighanov .. I remember everyone ahh this guy is solid top 4 potential
Dud and dud
So this guy coming
Let him play in the AHL prove something
Give Sandin the shot..
KHL. 🙄
Ilya worked out pretty nicely
Richard - I agree... leafs have been burned in the past with KHL superstars. The ice surface size is larger, and quality of opposing players is barely above AHL levels, so I'll wait and see on Lehtonen
I agree it's not worth getting too hyped up over the Russians ... Ozighanov and Lehtonen are very different beasts though
why not just resign Tyson Barrie?
He's about to get signed for 1 year by Edmonton for around that same price... Good riddance to that small winger that played a season on the leafs d
LOL, good one!
Not sure I see Weegar sign in TO for 3 million, tax purposes makes it not worth it - he’s better off signing in FLA for 2-2.5 and take home $ would be the same

Brodie, term and money too long and too much...he will help but not a good deal...we still have work to do but heading in the right direction...still need to get tougher, a stay at home D...i do like Weegar...and let some of the young guys play this year...GO LEAFS GO
Brodie is not overpaid too much. Its free agency. You need to pay to get these guys to turn down other offers.
@Spike10111 Brodie was projected based on some analytics models to get a 4.9 mil AAV, so we only overpaid by 100k.
Brodie is only 30. A four year term is perfect. The annual figure may be 500k too high, but it is free agency so you have to pay a little extra for good players. It also helps that Brodie played with a Norris callibre defencemen and held his own. He will be great alongside Rielly.
Brodie is getting paid fair market value. He would have easily gotten that term and AAV from another team.
If they can upgrade he is gone
Lets bring Ceci back, future norris candidate. Ottawa saw something in him why cant we bahahahah
@Landshark thank you sir. I do work hard for my content
It's sooo clear... come on Dubas... grow a brain
ok you win funniest comment of the day :)
