I would honestly love to see a trade like Puljujärvi to Faulk, 2nd and additional 4th + Good B tier prospect. It would be as well a win from both of the players perspective as well from the teams. Edmonton needs a d man like faulk and Im sure carolina would love to have puljujärvi playing with Aho again and give them more depth. Carolina also wouldnt hurt too much from losing faulk since their d depth would still be excellent.

I think the leafs should wait longer to do something about the blue line. Their defensive core isn’t as bad as people say it is and while it won’t be the best in the league it may be good enough. Gardiner just had a few bad games as most players do, and zaitsev and dermott are young guys who are developing. They should wait and give them some time to kick in, and by the deadline if the defence isn’t working in their favour then make a trade to fix up the blue line

    • steve hardman
      steve hardman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

When you say Gardiner just had a few bad games, I wonder how you can count 489 as a few? The guy has never been willing to put in the effort to play defense. I could live with dumb mistakes if he tries, but he is so terrible in his own end, I wouldn't believe someone that bad could be in the NHL if I didn't watch it with my own eyes. He was the highest paid d-man on the team for 2 years, and yet his coach won't trust him to kill penalties. On top of that, he totally folds in the clutch...and other teams know and exploit this. The Leafs will never be a contender with Gardiner in their top 4, maybe he could be hidden on the third pair but not with the salary he makes(and the salary he will be expecting after this season).
Or let's put this another way......did Babcock have Hainsey killing 2 minutes of penalty after penalty because he is that amazing? Or did he do that because he couldn't trust his other d-men? If Gardiner could play D, he could kill penalties

@xXxRawkFistxXx , good points there. Love the 3 centre idea and basically 4 sets of wingers.

I think the leafs should carry 3 centers and 7 Defensmen. That way the leafs can get more out of the defence.
      Rielly - Gardiner
      Dermott - Zaitsev
      Ozighanov(Marincin) - Carrick
      Hainsey
Hainsey can strictly play the PK(what he's good at) or if another D is having an off night. If you deploy 7 D you can better manage them. Let them play to their strengths and don't put them in spots to fail or overwork them.
As far as the center vacancy, Matthews, Tavares, and Kadri can take turns double shifting on the 4th line. It's not like a 4C would get a ton of minutes

I feel very bad for the Oilers as a Leafs dieheart. I remember they compare the 2 rebuilds years back. The problem is they fold under pressure.
    1. New GM won a stanley cup and drafting 1st again with Connor Mcdavid in oilers. Under the gun to instantly change the culture in a second. (Makes no sense and impossible when you have been shit for so many years. )
    2. Trading TAYLOR HALL for adam larrson smh preasure decision to obtain a RHD imminently. ( JUST SMH ... you guys did him dirty cause he was loyal to the oil like we did Demar Derozan.... only difference we got a Top 5 and MVP FInals player in return )
3.Signing Milan Lucic was a preasure decision to sign a " Star" player at free agency to play with they brand new oilers toy McDavid. ( Makes no sense to many miles on and the TERM !!! ).
    4. Jordan Eberle for Strome SMH ... I think he would have finished like 3rd in scoring with the points he got this year if he was with Oilers.

    • anotherbrownguy
      anotherbrownguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Nah bud that is not true, it took the man 1 whole year to get over the trade and he was heartbroken. He was loyal and hype for the new arena and new era. He always said he wanted to be there for the winning years and he knew with McDavid it was sooner rather than later. McDavid lived with him rookie year so Hall can show him how to be a Pro. You wouldn't do that if he was poison. You could say that about my Leafs and Phil the Thrill traded to the pens but not with Hall.

    • DEVILS REJECT
      DEVILS REJECT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

There was more to that hall trade then just getting a defenceman he was poisoned by my teams losing culture and they didn't want him to rub off on connor and poison him also

  • The Stone Canoe

I like the way the leafs look now I can’t see them doing anything crazy to add to their d and as crazy as it sounds there is room for Dermott to develop as well as any of the prospects

  • FlareKnight
    FlareKnight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Oilers got to look for some kind of solution on the blueline with that injury. They've got the best player in the league. How many years of that career can they afford to waste?
I'd agree the Leafs probably won't make a huge move on the blueline. They don't have to right now. Can see how the year plays out and see if something is there closer to the trade deadline.
Making light fun...but the Nylander thing was kind of funny. So what you are saying is...the Leafs are talking to Nylander about some kind of contract? Shocking news!

    • Andrew Piluk Hockey
      Andrew Piluk Hockey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

No offence but if you listened I said it was a debate between a bridge deal or long term contract. In fairness there are some fans that don’t understand that side of hockey.

We’re pretty desperate on the blue line. The worst thing we could possibly do is rush Bouchard.

    • Jun Kim
      Jun Kim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well this was a deep draft year in any other draft year Bouchard can be a potential top 3-top 5 pick he could very well be the next Werenski or Ekbalad making it to the bigs right away and give immediate impact becoming a franchise staple for the Oilers.

  • Lucas Boissoneau
    Lucas Boissoneau 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oilers main Problems
    1-Cap Space
    Notable contracts
    Lucic-6M
    Sekera--5.5M
    Russell-4M
That's 15.1M Gathered up in player we don't really need being that their all aging and not worth that much salary
    2-Defence
    With Klefbom,Larsson
Nurse,Bouchard,Bear and Jones the future looks bright on the blue line when their fully developed but it's going to take some time but for the time being we still need to clear up cap space for Nurse and benning. With that said Nurse is looking for a long term deal and benning should be getting around 1.5M clearing cap space could be hard but we could have up to 20M in Cap space removing Lucic, Russell and sekera
3- Speed and depth up front
With guys like McDavid and Draisaitl we need some scoring wingers and we have some up and coming prospects like Pujujarvi,Benson,Yamamoto, being our top three up front
We need scoring on the wing and maybe trying Yamamoto with McDavid could work he has the speed and sense to do it now maybe try trading Pujujarvi for a solid dman before he is considered a bust then no one would want him
    4- Special Teams
And that just speaks for itself

    • dnoz13
      dnoz13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Draisaitl McJesus Sekera will be on long term injured and if the Oil can’t move his contract I hope they buy him out.

Just leave things as they are and wait a bit. The leafs are awesome and might surprise us with their maturity. Including the defence. I would rather they home grow their players rather than making trades. Build within remember leaf nation.

Krug scores more than RNH and he's a D, I just can't see how the Bruins are adding anything in a Krug-RNH swap.

  • Braeden’s Broadcasting Channel
    Braeden’s Broadcasting Channel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

As a bruins fan I would never trade Krug and something else for RNH. Our blue line is a bit above average rn and losing Krug is a big blow too our PP as well. Makes sense for the oilers but not at all for the Bruins.

    • anotherbrownguy
      anotherbrownguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Highly doubt it bud , we got more depth with a better younger core with players like Tavares Brown and Hyman who took a small discount. Edmonton has shit contracts no farm teach help and a bum town city that no one is going to give a discount to play in -50 watching cows or w.e the fuck they do. Gretzky was way past his prime and washed up by that point why would we give him big $$ we sell out every game no matter WIN OR LOSS. So it's true we didn't need him and we had a good team. He would have been a distraction for a cup contending team.

    • anotherbrownguy
      anotherbrownguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

He probably did because these are the differences also his situation vs McDavid's is completely different heres a quick small list of what i mean.
      1. Gretzky won right away and didn't stop winning with Edmonton. Leafs are hot now and Oilers well , I'll be classy and say they are turd sandwhich.
      2. Gretzky had a young core with star Depth in every position not what the Oilers of today have. Also my Leafs were shit in the 80's why would he want to go then?
3.Times have evolved McDavid's contract is more than double of Gretzky making his whole career lmao ! even with the rate of inflation c'mon McDavid is good on the money a few mill hometown discount to win a cup not gonna hurt him.
      4. Sorry but not sorry Living in Toronto 2018 vs living in Edmonton 2018 sounds like a rhetorical question.
Just these 4 things from the top of my head would get a man thinking. Not to mention of the " GREATNESS PRESSURE" will start to build to be the best and carry a shit team and not winning in a bum town nowhere . If he can survive that for 8 years lmao he is gonna wag his tail and run like Lassie back home to Toronto.

    • anotherbrownguy
      anotherbrownguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Don't worry cooper cody. You guys are doing a great job of grooming him like the isles did Tavares. We will have him after he's already paid and tired of losing he's gonna go for that home town discount at the real prime of his career. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

    • cooper cody
      cooper cody 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Makes zero sense for the Oilers. If they move RNH who plays wing in the top 6? He's one of 2 players to every find 5on5 chemistry with the best player in the NHL. Not to mention Mcdavid's expressed how frustrating it's been losing linemates.

The Leafs: They can trade for draft picks in the 2021 season, 3 years distant. they do NOT need draft picks now as they will not be able to pay any good ones so soon. So why not pack the cupboard for guys who will enter the league in about 2023 right around the time when some big contracts will be nearing their end to keep the foot on the gas and keep this time competitive long term. Marleau should go - Free up that 6M. KEEP Marner, Matthews and Nylander and build around them. Brown and Hyman are cheap - it would be stupid to trade them. Kapanen may be an issue as I doubt the Leafs can afford him long term and I think he'll be a great player. Keep Johnson as well. Hainsey and Gardiner should go. Timothy L can get brought up cheap for a bit. TOR will win games on offense. Hopefully it will counter the shaky D.

Chia already spent 3 years of McDavid and the team still isn't there. The help on the blueline will have to come from Bear or Bouchard and that's going to be in 2 years which is when i'll be able to call my Oilers true contenders.

  • rugged english

Canes gave up Skinner for a prospect and a couple picks. I don't want Oilers trading a roster player or one of big four blue line prospects. Benson and a third for Faulk. Unless canes eat salary, then maybe trade a first if canes pay half of Faulk remaining salary.

  • Doc Holliday
    Doc Holliday 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I'd rather the Leafs keep Gardiner over acquiring Faulk but if they don't sign him to an extension this summer than he should be moved . They can't allow another UFA to walk for free.
Nylander should be signed to a reasonable long term deal, I think his ceiling is to high for them to give him a bridge deal. He has the potential of really breaking out this season as do the other young Leafs and if they bridge him it may be impossible to resign him in 2 years.

    • Jun Kim
      Jun Kim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

But you know -/+ rating isn't a clear indicator of how good a D man is, Faulk played with a much much inferior goal tender than Andersson. He has been regressing for few years now but his best season is better than Gardiner's entire career and he's a right handed D man. He pads his stats but a D man that is a 29 year old and have years of experience should not make the mistakes that he makes, he makes mistakes worse than a rookie. It is unfortunate that we do not have statistics on turn overs resulting to goals but everytime I watch Gardiner he's turn over costs the team always. One of the main reason teams never maintain consistency is their utter failure to trade their UFA's. If we traded our UFA's we could have had the asset to trade for a top right handed d by now.

  • Colin MacInnis

I say do a long term with nylander 6.5×7mil. Trade Brown and a pick for faulk or Tanev

  • Benjamin Harrison
    Benjamin Harrison 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Sbisa would not help the Oilers, he had trouble defensively in Vancouver and in Vegas. And Klefbom was hurt last season, we went trade him for nothing now. We have a major rebound season in store but any trade fails because we dont have the assets. If we improve our draft picks lose value and only a few players RNH, McD, Drai, Puj, Yama, KBomb, Boo, maybe someone else but everything else is tainted by last season.
We gotta grab extra D for anything but players. Love to take a shot at a Predator defenseman or someone off of Columbus. Those are hardworking grind teams that can help our boys play some goddamn defense.

Will those saying the leafs are cup contenders just stop it. They need one stud defenceman....alot more grit up front and Matthews needs to get a lot tougher in the playoffs. The leafs are not gritty enough anywhere in the lineup to make a run. Stud D man and a few gritty players that can play.

the management in charge before Chiarelli came in was even worse, much worse. Chia is trying to solidify the blueline with draft picks and signing prospects. He realised that the cost for d-men is too high and he gets fleeced on those trades (reinhart + hall deal). Things are going in the right direction (d-man picked in the 1st round) but it isn't going fast enough to catch up with McDavid's cup expectation. In 2 years this team will look much better and Chia will get credit for it (although this team should've looked amazing by now). In 2 years either Bear/Bouchard is a full time Nhl-er, Yamamoto steps in , potentially Puljujarvi gets better (not sure how much), Sekera and Russell contracts expire. Hopefully this gives you a better idea on what's going on with the team

Andrew i say that the Leafsdo a sign and trade for Karlsson for Nylander and a 2nd rounder and minor leaguer than trade Gardner for a cheaper dmen or forward, then ask San Jose if they would take Marleau with the leafs eating 2 million per on his contract for a cheaper roster player, then next year you have enough to sign Marner and Mathews, plus the Cap is going to increase, and you pin the C on Karlsson he being a true leader that is not afraid to push everyone around him, he also can play 30 plus minutes so your 6th defensmen is irrellivent.

chevy Karlsson is gona walk at the end of next season, will choose where he wants go, Leafs perfect does not have to move his family, gona cost, but he is the best dmen in the NHL

He's going to be a UFA by season's end, no one ever gets that much for an expiring contract tell me any UFA that got that much price. Guys like Nash and etc never got an elite player back in return, Karlsson is a super star yes, but he is going to be a UFA by season's end stop smoking weed or shrooms, it is not good for you.

A player like Karlsson never get traded during the dead line or get an extremely expensive package. If the Leafs trade for Karlsson I feel it is going to be along the lines of this year's first round draft pick, a conditional 4th round draft pick (turns 3rd when we get out of the first round, and turns into a 2nd round draft pick if we make the Finals), Bracco, and Durzi. This deal is only offered if Karlsson is still a Sen during the trade dead line day.

    • Jun Kim
      Jun Kim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's very stupid, if Karlsson is going to get traded to the Leafs we are going to give a package of picks and prospects, Dubas is gonna go for the waiting game and deal for Karlsson if he is still a Senator by the deadline since Senators will become more desperate to trade him instead of losing him for nothing.

  • Fevzi Kamalov
    Fevzi Kamalov 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I think all the Krug rumours should just stop. It's Chiarelli and he's not doing anything big this summer, since his job is on stake. The only way the Oilers go for Faulk is if the Canes agree to a Caleb Jones + 3rd round pick type deal, which I'm not sure why they would want that. RNH currently is too valuable for the Oilers as trading him would spark massive negativity (as if it already isn't there) The MOST LIKELY SCENARIO: Oilers bring in Davidson and get another veteran for a PTO, that just seems how it will go given Chiarelli's summer and his sayings. Since we have McDavid there's always a chance, but after this injury one realizes how weak the team is. I hope for a good season but wouldn't be planning on playoffs. A VERY PRODUCTIVE SEASON FOR OIL: (puljujarvi getting more points, having a better look at Yamamoto/Rattie, improving Special Teams, adding speed to the even strength game and maybe seeing Bouchard/Bear here and there) I wouldnt' be disappointed if the Oilers accomplish the things mentioned above whilst still missing the playoffs, the roster is what it is and it'll come down internally to fix this season. My bet is on them improving but maybe not as much as many would hope.

If the sports media would just stfu about their opinions on Nylander, Marner and Matthews and giving them 7.o-7.5 for Nylander or a bridge deal which would both suck to get better defensively or 8.o-8.5 or bridge for Marner, again would suck to get better defensively or Giving Matthews 11.5-12 long term, which again would suck to get better defensively and the 3 of them hearing this and hearing that Marner and Matthews should wait to get more because both would be playing with amazing players. Tavares took way less money, at least 3 million+ to play with Toronto to win a cup and that's what the rest need to do. Every dollar spent counts. Nylander should get between 6.2-6.4 over 8, Marner 6.6-7.0 over 8 and Matthews 10.4-10.8 over 8. If they take these contracts, not only will they be able to sign defensive d-men, but will also be able to sign monster contracts after winning cups and awards, after their 8 year contracts are done. They will all have hundreds of thousands of dollars each banked when they retire. If they don't want to win and want more money instead, ruining a Leafs chance of winning multiple cups and I mean like 4 or 5 cups over that period, then trade that player for someone just as good, because who wants a player who just want money and cares less about a cup.So stfu tsn, sportsnet, ESPN, the score ECT and talk shit after Dubas is done his magic.

Nylander does not want a bridge, that’s why he hasn’t signed yet... I don’t think it’s about money but term. I think he is asking for 8 years and the leafs are looking for a max of six years.

I think we should trade Gardiner and Mcelhinney for pics and put sparks in as our backup. We have a ton of Dmen in the minors, we gotta be able to fill in and not get worse as our defense isn't amazing anyway. Our D is average and there are teams out there that will shower us with pics if a Gardiner mcelhinney combo checks the right boxes. I'm sure the leafs are actually working on just that but we will see. Also don't get me wrong I like Gardiner but we don't need an Offensive D and we can't afford him next season anyway. Sparks won't make it back into the minors and Mcelhinney is a score for a team that's still hurting for a backup because they can use him until they find their long term solution and he's the best backup in the nhl right now. As for his age remember, Johnny bower was older than him when he made the nhl and he's one of the best ever.

      @Andrew
I disagree about Gardiner not being a liability especially when he's paired with Zaitzev. Nearly every game that pairing gave up at least several prime scoring chances and/or a goal or two with them on the ice. I would 100% move Gardiner if he could return a good defensive defenseman.
Gardiner is what he is at this point and the chances of him improving are slim and if you moved Gardiner and gave Zaitzev and Dermott more PP time I think losing Gardiner's offense isn't going to hurt much compared to if you could bring in a good defensive Dman to prevent goals that Gards is currently giving up.
Also the biggest reason to move Gards now is that he has decent value and also is on the last year of his contract and I REALLY don't want to re-sign him for big money. He is NOT the kind of Dman that I want the Leafs to lock up for multiple years at 5+ million per because there's a very good chance that he'll become Phaneuf 2.0 where we'll be looking to unload his contract in a couple of years. Let someone else make that mistake while for me if there's a good defensive Dman that we could trade him for I would do it without hesitation.

It is a tough decision with respect to our backup. One thing to keep in mind is the difficulty of the position. What if Sparks can't adjust to playing 14 to 18 games and still stay sharp. One thing Curtis McElhinney showed us is he is extremely reliable in that role. Sparks did show he is ready for the next level and I hope he can manage that role of backup as it will be a couple years until he is given the opportunity to show he an handle more. Quite the dilemma and one we Leaf fans haven't had the luxury of having to address in many many years. All I will say is "In Shanahan We Trust"

whose salary will be going up so u have to choose, McD or Hall or Draisital. McDavid is the Captain so Hall had to go. As for Eberle he is a tiny guy who was always picking his butt up off the ice . We had a guy like him once before named Mike Comerie, when the playoffs came he was flattened everytime he went in a corner.
